Sustainability

EHA is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of both our organization and our community.

Our biggest opportunity to make a difference is with Congress, the biggest and most important hematology event in the European calendar.

In recent years, we’ve pioneered a range of new initiatives aimed at reducing our carbon footprint.

EHA2024 environmental progress report

Downloadable participation certificates

We reduced the use of both paper and printer ink by making the certificate of participation available to download on the Congress platform.

Transportation

We offset at least 2,989kg of CO₂e (CO₂ equivalents) by purchasing 1,000kg of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

We also offset 1,247kg of CO₂ from EHA employees’ flights by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel—representing a 34% year-on-year increase in offsets.

We provided free public transport tickets to all registered participants.

Catering

We pioneered a new ‘build-your-own-lunch’ approach to reduce food and paper waste.

We selected a catering partner who focused on sustainable and local products and avoiding single-use plastic tableware.

Lanyards

We introduced lanyards made of polyester fiber from recycled PET bottles. These were made in a factory where 80% of the power came from European solar panels.

Venue

We selected a convention center that was powered by 100% renewable energy and that used specific bins to encourage waste separation and recycling.

We even used a unique carpet— the only one in the world to have received a Silver certification from Cradle to Cradle.

Audio-visual power

Our official audio-visual partner allocated 25,000m2 of degraded land in Kenya for ‘regreening.’ This was in addition to the 25,000m2 it allocated in 2023.

Shirt donation

After the Congress, we donated EHA staff clothing to a charity that helps underprivileged children, families, and young people in the Netherlands and Iraq.

EHA2025 activities

Inspired by the success of EHA2024, we’ve raised our ambition for EHA2025.

We’ll provide another sustainability report after the Congress. Watch this space.
