The 4th Highlights of Past EHA (HOPE) Middle East & North Africa (MENA) took place (for the third time) in Cairo, Egypt, organized in collaboration with the Pan Arab Hematology Association (PAHA) and hosted by the Egyptian Society of Hematology and Research (ESHR), and supported by the national hematology societies from the region, who were represented in the program as chairs of various sessions. The meeting was attended by 210 delegates, from 9 different countries. The majority of attendees were from Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

The program covered a wide variety of topics presented during the 24th EHA Congress, selected based on local input. The program covered the following topics:

  • Red cell & iron
  • Hemoglobinopathies
  • Lymphoid malignancies
  • Transfusion
  • Laboratory diagnosis
  • Thrombosis & platelets
  • White cells
  • Leukemia

Besides the regular sessions a regional symposium on Hemoglobinopathies was organized with regional speakers. Oral and poster presentations were also included in the program to give local researchers the chance to present and discuss their work (80+ abstract accepted).

EHA also offered a scholarship program again this year. 15 scholarship winners from Egypt and 16 from the neighboring region received complimentary attendance to the meeting as well as some financial support for travel and accommodation. Through the scholarship program young hematologists got the opportunity to meet international experts and hear the latest updates in hematology.

EHA would like to thank the supporting and hosting partners, the delegates as well as the pharmaceutical companies who supported the meeting, Janssen, Novartis, AstraZeneca, and Takeda.
