In 2018, the Physician Scientist Research Grant was awarded for the first time. During the 24th EHA Congress, Delfim Duarte from Porto, Portugal received the award. EHA has recently brought key stakeholders around the table to discuss bureaucratic obstacles in clinical research. Regulators, patient organizations, the European Commission and industry representatives were invited for a day-long discussion at EHA offices, building on an informal dialogue with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) that had been initiated by a group of prominent clinical researchers.

In recent weeks, two Calls for proposals were published that offer relevant funding opportunities for hematologists: IMI2 – 18^th Call for proposals, a jointly funded partnership between the European Union, and Horizon 2020 – Call for cancer research proposals, call for research proposals in the category ‘Societal Challenge 1 (SC1): Health, demographic change and wellbeing’. . 

In 2014 the European Parliament approved the Clinical Trials Regulation (CTR) that is supposed to replace the Clinical Trials Directive (CTD) from 2001. Five years later, the regulation has not yet become applicable. What is the aim of the ‘new’ regulation, what issues does it address, and why was its application delayed?

2019 will see significant changes within the European institutions. More than 12,000 hematology professionals from around the world met together in Amsterdam, The Netherlands for the 24th European Hematology Association (EHA) Congress.

He started at EHA in the early days when it was still being run by a small office in Rotterdam. Now, EHA has grown and he's still with us. Meet Ton Hagenbeek and learn about what he's doing for EHA and why he has been volunteering through out all these years! 

Onco-hematology was the focus of the two-day EHA Hematology Tutorial in Moscow, Russia, the third joint tutorial organized by EHA, the National Hematological Society (NHS) and the Russian-Oncohematology Society (ROHS). The first edition was held in 2013 in St Petersburg, the second in Moscow in 2016 and now in Moscow again.

Patient-centric treatments such as gene and cell therapies have been a game-changer in tackling hematological disorders. Nonetheless, their development remains slow and erratic, limiting benefit for patients.

Learning how to recognize and treat a disease that is relatively new to many parts of Europe, and spreading, is crucial to limit, if not avoid, irreversible impact and provide proper care to patients.

The 8^th EHA-TSH Hematology Tutorial was held on April 6-7, 2019 in Izmir, Turkey. This marks yet another pleasant and fruitful collaboration between EHA and the Turkish Society of Hematology. This time, the tutorial focused on the topic of lymphoma and was chaired by Prof Anton Hagenbeek (NL) on behalf of EHA, and Prof Guner Hayri Özsan (TU) on behalf of TSH.

Maria Victoria Mateos currently heads the Scientific Program Committee of the 24^th EHA Congress which will be held on June 13-16 in Amsterdam.
