EHA honors distinguished leaders in hematology

The European Hematology Association (EHA) has announced the recipients of its 2025 awards, spotlighting a generation of leaders, researchers, and clinicians whose work is transforming the landscape of hematology worldwide.

The EHA Awards have evolved from recognition of individual excellence into an initiative to celebrate innovation, foster community, and highlight EHA’s position as a driver of advancements in hematology. This year’s awards were guided by newly established criteria and a fully independent selection process, which required clear rationale and evidence of impact.

The community sent in nominations which were judged by a selection panel that included the EHA Board, Young EHA (EHA’s early-career community), Patient Advocacy Committee (representing the patient advocacy organizations), and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce. This year’s recipients exemplify the depth and diversity of hematology’s global community.

A lifetime devoted to myeloma

Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, Prof. Jesús F. San Miguel was acknowledged as a “global leader in multiple myeloma research,” whose work has improved patient survival rates and advanced the evaluation of minimal residual disease (MRD), which is now an endpoint approved by the FDA thanks to his contributions.

Described by nominators as “a mentor to many of today’s leaders in multiple myeloma,” Prof. San Miguel’s career is marked by prolific research, international leadership, and a lifelong commitment to advancing patient outcomes. His legacy includes pivotal work that redefined treatment benchmarks and inspired a generation of hematologists.

Redefining care in thalassemia

Dr. Khaled Musallam received the Clinical Excellence Award for his vision that redefined guidelines for patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT). Through large observational studies, he demonstrated how moderate anemia leads to long-term complications. His research helped bring several therapies to clinical relevance and transformed iron overload management strategies.

“This award is a reflection of the dedication, hard work, and trust of the various teams and collaborators,” said Dr. Musallam. “I am grateful for their support and for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our patients.”

The science behind the cure

Winner of the Research Excellence Award, Prof. Alberto Orfao was recognized for his role in developing diagnostic techniques for leukemia and lymphoma used in over 2,000 institutions globally. With over 665 papers and 45 patents, Prof. Orfao’s work has deeply influenced how hematologic malignancies are detected and treated.
“This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of my colleagues and collaborators,” said Orfao. “None of these achievements would have been possible without their support.”

The mentor behind the scientists

The Education and Mentoring Award went to Prof. Jan Cools, who not only guides young scientists with care and critical insight but also serves as editor of HemaSphere, EHA’s flagship journal. His mentees describe an environment of “empowerment, trust, and scientific freedom”. This combination has helped shape more than 35 early-career researchers.

In his speech, Prof. Cools humbly redirected praise to his mentees: “This award is not for my guidance, it is for the bright stars of today and the leaders of tomorrow, who inspire me every day.”

Equity in action

For her tireless efforts to reduce healthcare disparities, Prof. Anna Schuh was awarded the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Award. Schuh was honored for her work in East Africa, including the development of a liquid biopsy test for Burkitt’s lymphoma and the founding of the region’s first hematology clinic.

“I have tried to do the best I can in my capacity to elevate groups that are underrepresented and do not have the same access,” Schuh said. “This award is a recognition of the collective efforts of many individuals who are committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable community.”

Future in focus

Dr. Mandy Lauw, recipient of the Young EHA Award, exemplifies the new wave of leadership shaping hematology. As former chair of the Young EHA Committee, she championed programs that amplified early-career voices, supported DEI efforts, and expanded opportunities in education and research. Her clinical focus on thrombosis and bleeding disorders paired with global collaborations makes her stand out in both science and leadership.

“Mandy’s role has been crucial in enhancing Young EHA Committee’s role in all EHA events and committees,” said one nominator. “She promoted meetings to understand the needs of young physicians and translated them to the EHA Board.”

Our awards ceremony

EHA congratulates all awardees for their exceptional work and looks forward to celebrating their achievements during Congress.

Held annually during the EHA Congress, the awards ceremony shines a spotlight on these achievements before an international audience. “By showcasing excellence from diverse corners of the field, we elevate standards, expand equity, and inspire future innovation,” said EHA President Prof António Almeida. “Our commitment remains to recognize, support, and amplify the people driving real change.”
