Nomination criteria
The EHA Awards recognize outstanding individuals who have made meaningful contributions to hematology through research, clinical care, education, mentoring, leadership, equity, inclusion, innovation, and community impact.
To support a fair and transparent process, all nominations are assessed against clear eligibility rules, award-specific criteria, and EHA’s principles of excellence, independence, and broad representation.
General eligibility
To nominate or be nominated for an EHA Award, the following criteria apply:
- The nominator and nominee must be EHA members. If you are not sure if a nominee is a member, please email [email protected].
- Nominations must be submitted by an EHA member or EHA committee through the official nomination form.
- The nomination must include the nominee’s name, email address, country, CV, and a structured motivation statement of approximately 500 words.
- The motivation statement should outline the nominee’s impact, innovation, contribution to hematology, and alignment with EHA values.
- Nominees should be actively engaged with EHA and demonstrate involvement in EHA activities, committees, scientific working groups, community initiatives, or related work.
- Nominations should follow the questions provided in the nomination form to allow for a fair and consistent comparison.
Exclusion guidelines
To ensure fairness, transparency, and independence, the following exclusion rules apply:
- Individuals who have served on the EHA Board within the past three years are not eligible for nomination.
- Current EHA Board members, Board observers, and selection panel members are not eligible during their term of service.
- Previous award recipients are not eligible for nomination in any award category for ten years following their award.
- The winner of an award cannot have the same nationality as the previous year’s recipient in that same award category.
- To support broad institutional representation, the selection process aims to avoid multiple award recipients from the same institution in the same year.
- Self-nominations are not permitted.

Criteria for specific awards
The EHA Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an exceptional career-long contribution to hematology.
Nominees should demonstrate:
- A valuable and sustained contribution to hematology over at least 20 years
- Dedication to advancing the field through clinical, scientific, educational, leadership, or community impact
- Pioneering, innovative, or field-shaping work
- A lasting influence on hematology and the wider EHA community
As the 2026 winner was from the United Kingdom, the 2027 winner must be from another country.
The EHA Clinical Excellence Award recognizes outstanding achievement, leadership, or commitment in clinical practice or clinical research.
Nominees should demonstrate:
- A valuable contribution to clinical hematology
- Dedication to improving clinical practice, patient care, or clinical research
- Pioneering, innovative, or impactful work in the clinical or clinical research setting
- A clear contribution to advancing standards, knowledge, or outcomes in hematology
As the 2026 winner was from the Spain, the 2027 winner must be from another country.
The EHA Research Excellence Award recognises outstanding achievement or commitment in basic and translational research.
Nominees should demonstrate:
- A valuable contribution to hematology research
- Dedication to advancing scientific knowledge in the field
- Pioneering, innovative, or influential work in basic or translational research
- Clear research impact, scientific leadership, or contribution to future developments in hematology
As the 2026 winner was from the United Kingdom, the 2027 winner must be from another country.
The EHA Education and Mentoring Award recognizes outstanding achievement in education, mentoring, and the development of others in hematology.
This may include contributions to:
- Education and training, including education technology
- Evaluation methods and educational quality improvement
- Mentoring of students, trainees, researchers, clinicians, or early-career professionals
- Innovative approaches to learning, professional development, or research mentorship
Nominees should demonstrate:
- Excellence in education, mentoring, or educational innovation
- Dedication to supporting the development of others
- Evidence of educational or mentoring effectiveness
- A meaningful contribution to hematology education, regardless of academic title, setting, or language of delivery

The EHA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Award recognises individuals who help build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive hematology community.
Nominees should demonstrate impact in one or more of the following areas:
- Promoting diversity by increasing representation or opportunities for underrepresented groups
- Advancing equity through fair, unbiased, and accessible practices
- Strengthening inclusion by ensuring that diverse voices and perspectives are heard and valued
- Developing initiatives that improve outcomes for underrepresented groups
- Embedding DEI into long-term strategies, structures, or practices
- Showing leadership, advocacy, or allyship in professional, scientific, educational, or community settings
Building partnerships with academic institutions, patient advocacy groups, policymakers, or professional communities.
As the 2026 winner was from the Italy, the 2027 winner must be from another country.
The Young EHA Award recognizes early-career professionals and researchers who have demonstrated impactful scientific, clinical, educational, or community achievements aligned with EHA’s values.
Nominees must be:
- Early-career professionals or researchers in hematology or a closely related field
- Under 37 years of age at the time of submission
Nominees should demonstrate:
- Achievement and impact in science, clinical practice, education, advocacy, or community engagement
- Leadership, initiative, or innovation
- Commitment to EHA values, including collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainability
- Strong potential for future contribution to hematology and the EHA community
As the 2026 winner was from the Germany, the 2027 winner must be from another country.
