The EHA Research Excellence Award is awarded for an extraordinary achievement or commitment to basic and translational research.
The nominated person must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in the field of basic or translational research
This award was formerly known as the José Carreras Award.
2026 winner
The 2026 winner of the EHA Research Excellence Award is Prof George Vassiliou (United Kingdom).
Prof Vassiliou has been elected in recognition of his outstanding leadership in hematological medicine, pioneering research in myeloid malignancies, and significant contributions to clinical excellence and education. His work includes mentoring future leaders and shaping international standards in cancer genomics, advancing both science and patient care globally.
