EHA-SWG Scientific Meeting on Bleeding and Platelet Disorders: Advances in Pathology, Diagnosis, and Management

Dates: April 9–11, 2026
Location: Florence, Italy
Chairs: Giancarlo Castaman and Paolo Gresele
Collaborating Specialized Working Groups (SWGs):

Overview

This comprehensive meeting will provide an update on the topics of:

  • Congenital and acquired bleeding
  • Platelet disorders

In this field, the last few years have brought innovative and landscape-changing therapeutic approaches. To promote education on these topics, including pathogenetic mechanisms, diagnostic laboratory techniques, and treatment, the meeting format will:

  • Encourage networking among attendees
  • Showcase interactive sessions where attendees can discuss complex clinical cases

Program

The program will join translational research on novel pathophysiological mechanisms and the most updated laboratory methods to the clinical management of these conditions.

Key topics will include:

  • Pathophysiology of congenital and acquired bleeding and platelet disorders
  • The laboratory diagnosis of bleeding disorders and the impact of innovative genetic analysis techniques
  • Clinical and laboratory approach to rare coagulation disorders
  • Real-life problems of persons with bleeding disorders
  • The creation and implementation of registries for rare bleeding disorders
  • The management of bleeding disorders, with a focus on gene therapy and innovative treatments

Learning objectives

By attending this meeting, participants will be able to:

  • Gain knowledge on novel pathophysiological mechanisms of inherited platelet disorders, immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), thrombotic thrombocytopenias (TTP), von Willebrand disease, and hemophilia
  • Understand the role of the most updated laboratory methods in the diagnosis of bleeding and platelet disorders, with a focus on genetic analysis and on the integrated approach between clinical and laboratory diagnosis
  • Get acquainted with the management of bleeding and platelet disorders with a focus on new drugs, gene therapy, and innovative treatments
  • Understand the initiatives for the creation of registries for rare platelet and bleeding disorders, including the recently funded SWG-initiated project on the creation of the first European Registry of Inherited Platelet Disorders (ERIPD)
  • Discuss real-life problems from the patient, clinician, and regulatory agencies point of view and to understand novel patient-reported parameters to be evaluated to assess the efficacy of treatments

Target audience

The meeting is intended for:

  • Non-malignant hematologists
  • Thrombosis and hemostasis specialists
  • Clinical laboratory specialists
  • Research scientists
  • Patient advocates
