General criteria
Our refreshed EHA Awards program is designed to recognize and encourage the extraordinary achievements of individuals across the field of hematology.
Eligibility
- To nominate or be nominated, you must be an EHA member.
- Nominations must be made by an EHA member or EHA committee using the above form. This involves answering basic eligibility criteria questions and providing the nominated person's name, email address, and country.
- You must also provide a short motivation statement of no more than 400 words and the CV of the person you want to nominate.
- Self-nominations are only allowed for the following awards:
- EHA Education and Mentoring Award
- Young EHA Award
- EHA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award
Exclusion
- An award winner's nationality cannot be the same as the previous year's winner.
- Previous award recipients are not eligible for nomination in the same category. This rule applies for life.
- EHA Board members and selection panel cannot be nominated during their term of service.
Criteria for specific awards
EHA Lifetime Achievement Award
The EHA Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded for an extraordinary lifetime contribution to the field of hematology.
The nominated person must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology over at least a 20-year period
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in their field
This award was formerly known as the Jean Bernard Lifetime Achievement Award.
As the 2024 winner of that award was from Italy, the 2025 EHA Lifetime Achievement Award winner must be from another country.
EHA Clinical Excellence Award
The EHA Clinical Excellence Award is awarded for an extraordinary achievement or commitment to the clinical or clinical research field.
The nominated person must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in the clinical or clinical research field
This award was formerly known as the David Grimwade Award.
As the 2024 winner of that award was from the UK, the 2025 EHA Clinical Excellence Award winner must be from another country.
EHA Research Excellence Award
The EHA Research Excellence Award is awarded for an extraordinary achievement or commitment to basic and translational research.
The nominated person must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in the field of basic or translational research
This award was formerly known as the José Carreras Award.
As the 2024 winner of that award was from the Netherlands, the 2025 EHA Research Excellence Award winner must be from another country.
EHA Education and Mentoring Award
The EHA Education and Mentoring Award is awarded for achievement in:
- Education, including education technology
- Evaluation methods
- Administrative efforts
- Other topics and efforts related to student education and/or in support of research mentorship
This education or mentoring in question might relate to the basics and fundamentals of clinical practice and/or research, including applications or emerging topics of heightened interest. The emphasis is on both the delivery and quality of the education and mentorship provided.
The criteria for selection will include:
- Excellence in education, including education technology, evaluation methods, and administrative efforts
- Dedication and effort on behalf of student education and/or in support of research mentorship
- A high level of educational and/or mentoring effectiveness, supported by student research scholarship and evaluations, and showing innovation in education
The nominated person can be at any stage in their career, but they must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in education or mentoring in the field of hematology
EHA recognizes the diversity of the hematology community, and this award therefore focuses on education and mentoring in hematology regardless of:
- Academic qualifications
- Setting
- The language in which the education or mentoring occurs

As the 2024 winner was from the Czech Republic, the 2025 winner must be from another country.

EHA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award
The EHA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Award is awarded for an achievement or commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and demonstrating DEI principles.
The nominated person must have:
- Made a valuable contribution to the field of hematology
- Shown dedication to their work and commitment to furthering the field of hematology
- Been responsible for pioneering and innovative work in DEI in the field of hematology
You can nominate someone for this award for a range of reasons. Examples include:
- Promotion of diversity — such as creating an inclusive culture and actively increasing representation of and opportunities for underrepresented groups
- Commitment to equity — such as advocating for the fair and unbiased treatment of all individuals
- Contribution to inclusion — such as actively engaging diverse stakeholders, fostering collaboration and networking opportunities, and ensuring the voices and perspectives of all individuals are heard and valued
- Impact and innovation — such as developing initiatives that have resulted in improved outcomes for underrepresented groups
- Sustainability and scalability — such as ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in long-term strategies and practices
- Leadership and influence — such as actively advocating for diversity and inclusion at conferences and meetings and practicing allyship for underrepresented groups
- Collaboration and partnership — such as collaborating with other stakeholders, including academic institutions, industry leaders, patient advocacy groups, and policymakers, to collectively advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within hematology

Young EHA Award
The Young EHA Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated impactful scientific, clinical, or community achievements that align with EHA’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.
The nominated person must be:
- An early-career professional or researcher in hematology or a closely related field
- Under 37 years of age at the time of submission
You can nominate someone for this award for a range of reasons. Examples include:
- Achievement and impact — such as scientific contribution, clinical practice impact, or community engagement
- Leadership and innovation — such as project leadership or innovative approaches
- Commitment to EHA values — such as advocacy for diversity and inclusion or sustainability efforts
- Potential for future contribution — such as career development plans or potential for leadership roles

The HemaSphere Editors' Pick Award is awarded to the highest-cited paper in HemaSphere.
It's voted for by the journal's editors.
