Meeting report | HOPE LA 2019 | Mendoza, Argentina
The first edition of the Highlights of Past EHA (HOPE) meeting in Latin America (LA) was held on October 4-5, 2019 in Mendoza, Argentina. The meeting concluded the biennial congress of the Sociedad Argentina de Hematología (SAH), HOPE LA’s main partner this year.
HOPE LA was supported by its partners in the Latin American region:
- Associação Brasileira de Hematologia Hemoterapia e Terapia Celular
- Sociedad Chilena de Hematología
- Asociación Colombiana de Hematología y Oncología
- Sociedad Paraguaya de Hematología Medicina Transfusional
- Sociedad Peruana de Hematología
- Sociedad de Hematología del Uruguay
- Sociedad Venezolana de Hematología
Representatives from the various societies were present for the meeting and took active part in the program as chairs and regional symposium speakers.
The 1,5 day program was a big success, and attended by over 1000 delegates from a variety of countries from South America. The majority of attendees came from Argentina but there were also representatives from Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia and more!
It was so wonderful to chat to those at the conference which happened particularly after the talk and during the rest of the evening, as well as get to know some faculty members too. I think I'm not just speaking for myself when I say that I came away with new friends and connections.

The meeting consisted of 7 main topics: aplastic anemia & neutropenia, thrombosis & coagulation, leukemia, MDS, MPN, red cell & iron disorders and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In addition to these sessions, Prof MV Mateos gave a keynote lecture on Multiple Myeloma and a regional symposium on Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) was included. During the symposium young doctors from the different partner societies were given the opportunity to share their views on HL in their respective countries.
