Specialized Working Group on Transfusion

Overview

The aim of the Transfusion SWG is to advance patient care by optimizing transfusion practice in Europe and beyond.

We achieve this by strengthening and invigorating European transfusion research, creating new networks, and fostering collaboration.

Blood transfusion is one of the most common procedures carried out in hospitals. It’s therefore essential that that the right patient safely receives the right blood component, for the right reason, at the right time. Errors expose patients to risks of adverse effects and waste limited resources.

The breadth of research in transfusion is wide, and includes:

  • Conventional or novel blood components, such as red cell transfusions
  • Whole blood components in major bleeding
  • Plasma-derived and recombinant human plasma proteins
  • Apheresis

These areas of research activities are described in an updated section on transfusion that has been submitted for the revised EHA Roadmap for European Hematology Research.
