Specialized Working Group on Aging and Hematology
The Aging and Hematology Special Working Group (SWG) is dedicated to advancing geriatric hematology by fostering collaboration among physicians and researchers. Our mission is to establish high common standards, create networking opportunities, and shape the future of care for older adults with hematologic conditions through the integration of clinical expertise and scientific innovation.
Our priorities
Clinical tools and assessment
We share clinically useful tools for assessing frailty and comorbidities in older adults with hematologic malignancies. By promoting standardized assessment methods, we aim to improve patient stratification and treatment decision-making across healthcare settings.
Knowledge dissemination
We facilitate access to guidance documents and evidence-based resources, whether developed internally or by national, European, and international organizations. This ensures clinicians and researchers have ready access to the latest recommendations and best practices in geriatric hematology.
Guideline development
We develop evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for underserved topics, including:
- Cardiovascular complications in older adults receiving therapy for hematologic malignancies
- Management of antineoplastic agents in patients with renal impairment
- Recognition and management of cognitive dysfunction in older adults with hematologic malignancies
Bridging science and clinical practice
A core priority is bridging basic and translational scientific discoveries with clinical care. We actively promote dialogue between laboratory researchers and clinicians to accelerate the translation of novel findings into improved patient outcomes. This includes:
- Identifying age-related biological mechanisms that influence treatment response and toxicity
- Translating insights from aging biology research into practical clinical applications
- Supporting collaborative research addressing the unique biological and clinical challenges of treating hematologic malignancies in older adults
- Encouraging multidisciplinary approaches that integrate geriatric oncology principles with cutting-edge hematologic research
By connecting fundamental scientific discoveries with real-world clinical needs, we develop more personalized, effective, and tolerable treatment strategies for older adults with hematologic malignancies. Through knowledge sharing, collaborative research, and comprehensive guideline development, our SWG is committed to improving outcomes and quality of life for this growing patient population.
