1st European EHA Sickle Cell Conference
EHA is teaming up with the Annual Scientific Conference on Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia, 2020 and the British Society of Haematology (BSH) to co-organize this first European Sickle Cell Conference; and also as a result of COVID-19 offer it as a virtual program from October 26 to 31 with a potential face-to-face element in the final days (depending on the developments).
This year’s conference may in time turn out to provide a new and improved forum for us to come together to share best practice and develop strategies for the future. Therefore the theme will be ‘Hemoglobinopathies: Emerging Challenges and Future Therapies'. This theme reflects the rapid progress in research for new drug therapies and curative therapies; a number of FDA approvals and other national approval process are at different stages. The fact that the majority of patients with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia live in low resource settings these new therapies may not be readily accessible or affordable, means that we must therefore refocus our attention to improve newborn screening and comprehensive care, hydroxyurea therapy, blood transfusion and effective iron chelation.
This meeting is part of the EHA Topics-in-Focus (TIF) program on Hemoglobinopathies. This program is aimed at raising awareness, providing education, furthering research, and building a network of experts to improve patient care.
This six day online conference is aimed at all those with a common interest in sickle cell disease and thalassemia, including:
- Consultant Hematologists
- Specialist Nurses
- Fellows and trainees in all related fields
- There will be patient led interactive sessions
20 CPD/CME points have been accredited from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College Pathologists, as well as the European Board for Accreditation in Hematology (EBAH).
