Highlights of Past EHA (HOPE) Asia 2020
October 16-17 2020
Dr N Senadheera (Sri Lanka College of Haematologists)
Prof J Gribben (European Hematology Association)
This second edition of HOPE Asia was presented together with the Sri Lanka College of Haematologists (SLCH) on October 16 and 17, 2020. HOPE Asia 2020 was originally planned in Colombo, but due to governmental restrictions, this meeting was made fully virtual. The hosting partner, SLCH, made the move from a physical venue to an online platform so that many could attend from Sri Lanka, SAARC and ASEAN countries, and knowledge could still be exchanged.
During the meeting, a variety of international and regional lectures were presented, demonstrating the highlights of this year’s EHA Congress (EHA25). Topics were selected to suit the regional hematologists, and ranged from hemophilia, thrombosis, ITP, myeloma, bone marrow failures, bone marrow transplantation and myeloproliferative neoplasms. Most sessions also gave participants insight to the Sri Lankan setting through the presentation of real patient cases. The program further featured an interactive quiz on morphology, prepared by Sri Lankan speakers, and an exciting debate on when to screen for thrombophilia.
Presentations were livestreamed via a dedicated platform, which included the possibility for participants to ask questions to the speakers. This meant that the Q&A sessions were lively and led to interesting and informative discussion. All presentations were recorded and made available to all registered participants on the meeting platform on-demand for an additional month after the meeting.
The over 150 attendees of the live sessions hailed from a variety of Asian countries in the SAARC and ASEAN region. EHA and SLCH offered scholarships which consisted of complimentary registrations to a selection of participants, in order to virtually attend. The meeting received the support from multiple partner societies from the region, whose representatives were also in attendance.
EHA would like to thank the organizing partner, the Sri Lanka College of Haematologists as well as the sponsors, faculty, and attendees for their contribution in making HOPE Asia 2020 a great success.
